These paleo and Whole30 Apple Monsters are fun, easy, and kid-friendly — my kids made them themselves. They’re a healthy, playful addition to a Halloween party or a way to brighten up an everyday meal. The recipe uses simple ingredients and can be adapted to be nut-free.
Whole30 Apple Monsters
Author: Autumn @wholefoodfor7
Ingredients
- 4 Granny Smith apples
- 4–5 strawberries
- 1/4 cup Whole30-compatible sunflower seeds (raw from bulk bins work well)
- 2 bananas (smaller bananas are easier to work with)
- 2 tablespoons raisins
- 1/4 cup compliant almond butter (or other compliant nut butter; use sunflower seed butter for a nut-free option)
Instructions
- Cut each apple into large wedges. On the skin side of each wedge, cut an almond-shaped slit to create a “mouth” that exposes the flesh.
- Press 4–5 sunflower seeds into one side of the “mouth,” using the pointy ends to secure them into the apple. These become the monster’s “teeth.”
- Spread almond butter on the opposite side of the “mouth” (the side without the seed teeth).
- Remove the strawberry stems and slice the berries vertically to create “tongues.” Place a strawberry slice on the almond butter inside each mouth.
- Make eyes by peeling a banana and slicing small round pieces. Use a dab of almond butter to stick a raisin onto each banana slice as the pupil, then attach the banana eye to the apple with more almond butter. Try both one-eyed and two-eyed monsters for variety.
- Serve immediately. If you need to prepare them ahead of time, brush the apple and banana slices lightly with lemon juice to slow browning.
