We enjoy smoothies throughout the winter — especially when the weather stays mild. If you’re somewhere colder, this bright, refreshing Pomegranate Citrus Smoothie brings a little sunshine to your day and helps you sneak in a boost of vitamin C.

Our small orange tree finally started producing juicy fruit, and when the citrus season lines up with pomegranates, a smoothie is the perfect way to use both. The citrus adds bright acidity while the pomegranate lends color, antioxidants, and subtle sweetness.

Pomegranate arils are beautiful and surprisingly easy to work with at home. I was concerned the seeds might make the smoothie gritty, but a high-powered blender makes the texture smooth and creamy while breaking down the arils completely.

To remove arils, score the pomegranate about 1/4 inch deep all the way around, pry it open, invert each half, and gently loosen the arils into a bowl of water. The arils sink while the membrane floats, making separation quick. One pomegranate typically yields more than a cup of arils, and doing it yourself is more economical than buying them pre-packaged. It can also feel a bit therapeutic — a small, satisfying kitchen task.

This smoothie is creamy, tangy, and sweet, packed with vitamin C and antioxidants — a welcome drink during cold and flu season. It’s quick to make and easy to adjust for your taste and blender strength.
