Pirate Craft Camp: Hands-On Pirate Training for Kids

I am excited to offer 30 days of fun crafts to keep kids active and entertained this summer! You won’t want to miss a single day of these creative projects from several talented bloggers. Be sure to visit them for more ideas and inspiration.

Hi! I’m Michelle from A Little Tipsy, and I’m thrilled to be here on Skip to My Lou to share a simple, fun summer camp craft idea.

With a house full of boys, we’re currently all about pirates. My 4-year-old and his cousin love the show Jake and the Neverland Pirates, so we put together a few easy pirate projects that kept them busy and imaginative for hours.

Their first task was to make and sail their ship. Use a large cardboard box turned inside out. Fold and tape one side to a point with heavy-duty packing tape to create a simple boat shape that’s sturdy enough for a floor-based pirate adventure.
Next, we made swords from paint stir sticks. Cut a stick into shorter sections (about three inches for the handle) and glue each short section to another full-length stick to form a simple sword. For quick assembly, hot glue works well; for a more durable result, use a stronger adhesive like E-6000 and allow it to fully cure.
We also made spy glasses from gray and yellow cardstock. Roll a strip of gray cardstock into a tube and glue it closed, trimming any excess. Attach a thin strip of yellow cardstock to each end for decoration, and add small dots with a marker to mimic rivets. These are lightweight and perfect for imaginative play.
My son declared it “the best day ever” and played with his pirate gear long after his cousin had sailed home. For the full set of activities and step-by-step photos from our afternoon of play, check out our pirate training camp on A Little Tipsy where we share additional craft ideas and variations to keep the fun going.
