Paleo, Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Product Guide for Smart Shopping

HERE’S WHAT I DID.

I went grocery shopping at one of the healthiest grocery stores in America: Whole Foods Market, and compiled a list of paleo, gluten-free, and dairy-free products I’ve purchased, tested, and genuinely liked.

If you follow a Paleo lifestyle (or are gluten-free or dairy-free), this guide offers ideas for pantry essentials, snacks, drinks, and ready-made meals to help you start the year on the right foot. If you’re simply curious about trying a cleaner way of eating, this list can also serve as a helpful starting point. Everyone is welcome.

WHAT COUNTS AS PALEO, GLUTEN-FREE, DAIRY-FREE:

  • Animal proteins (but not their processed by-products)
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Nuts and seeds

Simple and straightforward.

WHAT DOESN’T COUNT AS PALEO, GLUTEN-FREE, DAIRY-FREE:

  • Dairy (milk, cream, cheese, etc.)
  • Grains (wheat, barley, corn, etc.)
  • Legumes (beans, peas, soy, etc.)
  • Refined sugars and some vegetable oils

Also straightforward.

I prefer using terms like Paleo-friendly, naturally gluten-free, and naturally dairy-free for this roundup. The products below are natural choices for anyone aiming to eat more cleanly and simply.

Some store items are made from modified grains—gluten-free flours, breads, or muffins, for example. Those tend to be highly processed, and I wouldn’t recommend relying on them regularly. Our bodies handle whole, minimally processed foods better over the long term. Occasionally, for special occasions, I do buy labeled “gluten-free” baked goods to satisfy cravings, but they’re not included in this list.

Many of the recommended products are blends or combinations—like crackers made from nuts and seeds—but they remain minimally processed and easy on the body. Use this list as a guide, but always read labels and make choices that fit your needs. Try new items; there are always great new brands and products appearing that can expand your food options.

TWO WAYS I SHOP FOR PALEO-FRIENDLY, NATURALLY GLUTEN-FREE AND NATURALLY DAIRY-FREE PRODUCTS:

Shop the store perimeter. Fresh produce, meats, and seafood are usually found along the edges of the store, while the center aisles often contain more processed items.

Read labels. Whole Foods Market labels most packaged items. Check the ingredient list to see everything that went into the product and the nutrition panel for calories, protein, sugars, fats, carbohydrates, and sodium per serving.

Shopping the perimeter reduces temptation and keeps you focused on whole foods. Reading labels helps you understand how a product will nourish you.

Quick note: The most healthful choices are whole foods—fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, and seeds—not packaged items. That said, food companies are creating innovative, minimally processed products that expand variety while still aligning with a clean-eating approach. Finding those is a real treat and is part of why I put this list together: to show how manageable and satisfying a Paleo-friendly lifestyle can be.

CRUNCHY SNACKS:

Salty, crunchy chips—some perfect for dipping, others great on their own.

READY-MADE MEALS:

I’m a fan of homemade meals—there are plenty of simple recipes to try—but life gets busy and ready-to-eat options are useful. Whole Foods Market offers a hot bar (often stocked with Paleo-friendly options), a salad bar, and an in-store selection of prepared meals. Always check ingredient lists to avoid hidden additives.

NATURALLY SWEET SNACKS:

Pick a few favorites from frozen fruits, dehydrated fruit packs, and a wide range of nut and seed butters. Frozen berries make an excellent, simple snack straight from the freezer.

CLEAN SUPPLEMENTS:

I use collagen peptides daily and enjoy Vital Proteins products, including beef gelatin in coffee for added froth. Whole Foods Market stocks these and many other supplement brands—multivitamins, vitamin C, and immune-support formulas among them. As always, choose supplements that meet your needs and consult a professional when necessary.

ECO FRIENDLY BAGS:

Whole Foods Market sells reusable shopping bags that are durable and eco-friendly. I’ve had mine for years and they still look new. Many stores offer small credits for bringing your own bag—an easy way to reduce single-use packaging.
