I love the holidays. At our house, the music starts early and the tree goes up after Thanksgiving. We curl up on weekends with popcorn, simple homemade treats, and our favorite movies like Rudolph, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, A Christmas Story, and Elf.

One of the best parts of the season is the scent: warm gingerbread, freshly cut evergreens, cinnamon, and clove. This essential oil Christmas room spray combines those classic aromas into a single, natural mist. A few sprays can instantly bring a cozy, festive atmosphere to any room.

Essential oil holiday room spray ingredients & supplies

To make one 4-ounce bottle, gather:

  • Fine-mist glass spray bottle: Amber or cobalt blue glass helps protect oils from UV exposure and preserves their scent. Choose a 4-ounce mist bottle for best results.
  • Small funnel: For adding alcohol and distilled water without spills.
  • Grain alcohol (Everclear, 190 proof / 95%): High-proof alcohol dissolves essential oils more completely and acts as a preservative, helping the scent last longer. If unavailable, 151 proof vodka is an acceptable alternative though less effective.
  • Distilled water: Prevents impurities and extends shelf life. If you don’t have distilled water, you can boil tap water and let it cool before using.
  • 30–50 drops total of essential oils: Aromas vary by brand, so smell oils before buying. For a holiday blend, try Siberian fir (or Douglas fir/pine), juniper berry, clove, wild orange (or tangerine), and a drop or two of cinnamon for warmth.
  • Labels: Optional printable labels personalize your bottles. Choose waterproof or kraft label stock depending on intended use (shower-safe vs. room spray).

How to use your homemade Christmas room spray

Shake well before each use and spray upward around the room. For longer-lasting scent, lightly mist throw blankets, pillows, or bed linens. Below are practical ways to enjoy the spray:

  • Gift it: A handmade room spray makes a thoughtful stocking stuffer or hostess gift. Pair with a printable label for a polished presentation.
  • Air freshener: Keep a bottle in the bathroom or entryway for quick seasonal fragrance.
  • Enhance your tree: Spritz a real tree to amplify its natural pine scent or refresh an artificial tree.
  • Shower mist: Spray outside the direct water stream for a spa-like holiday shower.
  • Linen spray: Lightly mist pillowcases and sheets on Christmas Eve for an extra-special bedtime.

Ingredients

  • 4-ounce fine-mist spray bottle
  • 2 ounces distilled water
  • 1.5 ounces grain alcohol (Everclear)
  • 50 drops Siberian fir, Douglas fir, or pine (Siberian fir recommended)
  • 20 drops juniper berry
  • 5 drops clove
  • 5 drops wild orange or tangerine
  • 1–2 drops cinnamon (optional)
  • Printable labels (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse bottle(s): Clean thoroughly with distilled water and let dry.
  2. Add essential oils: Place the measured drops of each oil into the bottle. This recipe is intentionally concentrated so the scent lasts longer—reduce amounts if you prefer a lighter fragrance.
  3. Add alcohol and water: Use a funnel to pour in the grain alcohol and swirl to dissolve the oils, then top with distilled water. Shake well and adjust—add more oil for a stronger scent or more distilled water to soften it.
  4. Label the bottle: Dry the bottle completely and apply your label on a flat surface for neat placement.

Notes

Labels

Choose label stock that matches how you’ll use the spray. Weatherproof or film labels are best if the bottle may encounter moisture; kraft or paper labels are fine for dry use. Follow the label manufacturer’s printing instructions.

Essential oils and sensitivities

Essential oils are concentrated plant compounds and can cause reactions. Do not use undiluted on skin or ingest oils without professional guidance. Avoid use around infants, during the first trimester of pregnancy, or with anyone known to have severe allergies to the plant sources. If any irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately and ventilate the area. Be mindful of pets—some oils can affect animals, so research or consult a veterinarian if unsure.
