Delicious sliders made with homemade ketchup and sweet potato buns.

These sliders are a flavorful, healthier twist on classic mini burgers. Lately we’ve been cooking more from scratch because our household is avoiding gluten. These sweet potato sliders are ideal for food sensitivities: they use simple, natural ingredients yet remain satisfying and full of flavor. The standout element is the homemade ketchup — it tastes fresher and cleaner than most store-bought varieties and lets you control the ingredients. Store ketchup often contains preservatives, additives, and excess sugar you may want to avoid. Paired with roasted sweet potato rounds as buns, these sliders are a guilt-free treat. The sweet potato slices baked a bit smaller than store buns, so we each enjoyed a couple of sliders. They were so good they’ll be part of our regular meal rotation.

Ingredients you’ll need to make Homemade Ketchup:
- 1 small can or 1/2 cup organic tomato paste
- 1/3 cup raw organic honey
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1/2 cup onion, thinly sliced and diced
How to make Homemade Ketchup:
- Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk to blend, bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken and the flavors will meld.
- Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Transfer to a jar and refrigerate for up to two weeks, or freeze in ice cube trays for longer storage.
Making the Sweet Potato Buns:
To make the sweet potato buns, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with foil or parchment for easy cleanup. Slice a large yam or sweet potato into rounds, leaving the skin on if you like. Lightly rub each slice on both sides with coconut or avocado oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Arrange the slices on the baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes, until tender and slightly browned. Let them cool enough to hold like a bun. Note that the rounds may shrink slightly during baking, so make burger patties to match the finished size.
How to store Sliders with Homemade Ketchup:
Store baked sweet potato buns in the refrigerator for up to one week. Homemade ketchup keeps in the fridge for about one month, or longer if frozen. Reheat the buns in the oven or a toaster when you’re ready to assemble sliders.

Are Sweet Potato Sliders with Homemade Buns gluten and dairy free?
Yes. These sliders are naturally gluten- and dairy-free, making them a great option for people with those intolerances. Simply skip any cheese if you need to keep them dairy-free.
How long does Homemade Ketchup last?
Store homemade ketchup in the refrigerator for up to one month. If frozen, it can last up to six months; thaw and stir well before use.
