Creamy and bursting with fruit, this Strawberry Spirulina Smoothie is an easy superfood drink for breakfast or a nourishing snack. It’s simple to make, naturally sweet, and a delicious way to pack greens and protein into your day.

I never tire of strawberries. When they’re in season I buy too many, and then enjoy them in every possible form. This Strawberry Spirulina Smoothie has been a long-time favorite and has evolved over the years from a simple green smoothie into a more flavorful, nutrient-dense version. It combines fresh strawberries and banana with a few carefully chosen superfoods to make a smoothie that’s sweet, creamy, and packed with vitamins, fiber, plant protein, and healthy fats.

This smoothie is naturally sweet without added sugar, thick and drinkable, and satisfying as a quick breakfast or post-workout snack. It’s vegan-friendly when prepared with plant milk and can be adjusted easily with frozen fruit for a colder, thicker texture.

Ingredients used
All you need is a handful of simple ingredients and a blender. Key components include:
- Banana – Use a ripe banana for natural sweetness and creaminess. A frozen banana makes the smoothie extra thick and frosty.
- Milk – Unsweetened almond milk works very well; it adds a mild nutty note that pairs nicely with strawberries and banana. You can substitute organic soy milk if preferred.
Superfood additions lift this smoothie beyond a basic fruit blend:
- Ceylon cinnamon – Adds warm aroma and depth of flavor.
- Hemp seeds – Provide healthy omega fatty acids and a boost of plant-based protein. Chia or flax can be used as alternatives.
- Baobab powder – Adds a citrusy tang, fiber, and vitamin C for extra nutrition and brightness.

The standout ingredients in this recipe are fresh strawberries, baby spinach, and spirulina:
- Strawberries – Low in calories and naturally sweet, strawberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Fresh berries are ideal, though frozen work well and can thicken the smoothie; if using frozen fruit you may need to add a little more milk.
- Spinach – Baby spinach blends smoothly and adds vitamins, minerals, and a mild green flavor without overpowering the fruit.
What is spirulina?
Spirulina is a blue‑green algae often sold in powder form as a concentrated superfood. It’s high in protein and contains a range of vitamins and minerals. Spirulina has a distinctive green, slightly earthy flavor that can be strong on its own, but it blends nicely into fruity smoothies where the taste is well masked.
What does spirulina taste like?
Spirulina’s flavor is vegetal and earthy, and while not everyone loves it straight, it mixes well with sweet fruit. In this Strawberry Spirulina Smoothie the berries and banana tame the algae notes so you enjoy the benefits without an overwhelming green taste.

This Strawberry Spirulina Smoothie is made from all-natural ingredients and is naturally sweetened by fruit, vegan when prepared with plant milk, and free of added sugars unless you choose to add a sweetener. It’s a nutrient-rich choice for breakfast, offering fiber, plant protein, healthy fats, and a variety of vitamins and minerals.
