What are blood oranges?

Blood oranges look like ordinary oranges from the outside, but their flesh ranges from deep red to crimson. Their color and flavor are unique—often slightly sweeter than common oranges with subtle berry-like notes, sometimes described as a hint of raspberry.

What you need to make this blood orange sangria:

  1. Prosecco or Champagne: a sparkling white wine of your choice.
  2. Blood oranges: when in season they’re easy to find; substitute regular oranges if needed.
  3. Lemon: sliced to add brightness alongside the oranges.
  4. Sugar: a touch to balance the tartness (optional).
  5. Orange liqueur: Cointreau or Triple Sec work well.
  6. Seltzer water: club soda or flavored seltzer to taste for extra fizz.

  1. Juice half of the blood oranges and slice the rest into rounds. Slice the lemon. If the juice has pulp, strain it through a mesh sieve for a smoother drink.
  2. Place the sliced oranges and lemon in a large pitcher. Pour in the blood orange juice, orange liqueur and sugar, then add seltzer to taste.
  3. Pour in the chilled prosecco or champagne and gently stir to combine. Chill the sangria for about 1–2 hours before serving.

A sprig or two of fresh thyme makes a pretty, aromatic garnish, but it’s optional. This drink is simple, festive and visually striking—perfect for holiday gatherings or casual get-togethers.

Whether you’re hosting a crowd or a small group of friends, keep things relaxed: serve good food, pour a sparkling cocktail, and enjoy making new memories.
