Vegan Chocolate Blueberry Energy Bites for Quick Fuel

A healthy and delicious vegan chocolate blueberry energy ball recipe—perfect as a guilt-free midday snack or quick pick-me-up.

chocolate blueberry energy ball

Here’s one of my favorite snacks to bring to work: vegan chocolate blueberry energy balls. They’re easy to make, entirely plant-based, and packed with nutrients to keep you energized through a busy day. I often keep a jar of these handy for a sweet but wholesome treat when I need a little extra patience (or a break) during long shifts.

The texture is slightly sticky straight from the blender, so I like to roll the balls in a coating to keep them from sticking to your fingers. Popular coatings include:

  1. Powdered sugar mixed with cocoa powder and a pinch of cinnamon
  2. Powdered coconut flakes combined with cocoa powder

Both options add a pleasant finish and make the balls extra tempting. What really sets this recipe apart is the combination of frozen and dried blueberries. The frozen blueberries keep the interior fresh and juicy while the dried berries add concentrated flavor and chewiness. You can use only dried blueberries if that’s what you have, but I recommend trying the mix for the best result. I often use Wyman wild blueberries when available, but any good-quality frozen blueberries will work.

This recipe is very flexible—you can add your favorite nuts, seeds, or protein powders to suit your taste and nutritional goals. I like adding a scoop of raw meal or protein powder for an extra boost of protein and nutrients, but it’s optional. Keep the proportions roughly the same and adjust to your preferred texture.

Servings 10 energy balls

Ingredients

  • 1 cup 175 g fresh dates
  • ¼ cup 100 g almonds or cashews
  • cup 50 g dried blueberries
  • ¼ cup 20 g cacao powder
  • ¼ cup 41 g ground flaxseed
  • ¼ cup 42 g hemp hearts or hemp seeds
  • ¼ cup 24 g protein powder or raw meal (optional)
  • pinch sea salt
  • cup 50 g frozen blueberries

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients except the frozen blueberries into a food processor or blender. Pulse or blend until the mixture breaks down and becomes pliable. You may need to stop occasionally to scrape down the sides.
  • Gently fold the frozen blueberries into the blended mixture by hand so they remain intact.
  • Scoop the mixture by tablespoonfuls and roll into balls with your hands.
  • Roll each ball in your chosen coating (cocoa + powdered sugar and cinnamon, or powdered coconut + cocoa) to finish.
